Rosemary
Karuga
Rosemary Karuga developed her remarkable collages when caught
in the classroom where she taught with no paint to use with her
pupils. Remembering the lectures in Byzantine art she attended
in Kampala's Makerere University, Karuga started to make collages
from magazines she found and she has been developing the medium
ever since-long after her successes could have bought her paint
again. Rosemary KarugaIn October 1987, Rosemary participated in
the Women in Art in East Africa group show by Paa ya Paa Arts
Centre. Since then she has steadily concentrated on sculpture,
painting and collage and had a solo show in New York as well as
two solo exhibitions in Paris. Since 1992, she has shown at Gallery
Watatu.
Rosemary and John Karuga have 13 grandchildren.
