Jony Waite

ony Waite is a former West Coast painter and sculptor who has lived in Kenya since 1962. She is a co-founder of Gallery Watatu. Jony is one of the most industrious, popular and famous artist in East Africa and a pursuant of the Japanese action brush painting and Suna technique.

She studied fine art at the universities of Hawaii, California and Institute de Artes de san Miguel de Allende, Mexico and later in Japan and Hong Kong. She Jony Waiteis well known for her beautiful oils and watercolours of the bush, and for her pioneering work with women's artist groups in Athi River and Lamu. She has done many art exhibitions in Kenya, Europe, U.S.A. and Japan. Her major commissioned works are the steel sculptures at Need house, murals at the NileStars tours offices, Hilton and the New Stanley hotels in Nairobi and Watamu Hotel in Mombasa among many in private and public premises the world over.
