Abandoning the Hague's Royal School of Art Mid-way, Seuren took
to a travelling life that drew him eventually to Kenya. Living
now, like a hermit, on the island of Pate, Seuren combines his
devotion to Islam with an obsessive, highly personal and intellectual
exploration of colour and abstract form. His canvases are worked
and re-worked the precise texture and distribution of colour calculated
and applied over and over. A serene and other-worldly artist,
Seuren's Hans Seuren paintings are beautiful, honest and sincere.
Gallery Watatu, in Nairobi represented Hans Seuren for more than
a decade up until his death from illness early 1996. Further examples
of his work can be seen there. His works have been exhibited in
Kenya and Holland many times in both group and solo exhibitions. |
