Francis Kahuri praises human relationship with paintings that
transcend boundaries instilled by government, social classes and
customs, and geography. His boldly colored oil canvases depict
scenes of peace and survival readily understood across cultures.
With his astute eye and skilled hands, the artist captures the
human experience precisely, simplifying complex issues.
He began is art by hawking his "tourist-style" batiks
on Nairobi pavements. When gallery asked him to do what came naturally,
spontaneously, he produced village scenes with an extraodinary
cubist vision. He now works mostly in oil on canvas and continues
to develop his unreal vision of Kikuyu life. His many achievement
include a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant awarded in 1993. Encouraged
that his art is travelling around with the exhibition " In
Celebration of Women", Kahuri paints enthusiastically. His
positive attitude is contagious.
