Elijah Ooko
The thirty-something Ooko is a self-taught artist who started his career decorating kiosks and painting murals. He gave an almost human gaze and mien to his East Africa savanna wildlife of which he painted endlessly. In the late eighties Ooko joined the East African masters at the Gallery Watatu where Ruth Schaffner introduced him to canvas and became a life-long mentor.
