Wanyu Brush Portfolio

Artist Profile

Wanyu Brush is one of the founding fathers of East African art. However, even with his international success, he still lives in a simple house in Ngecha village, where he was born. At birth he was called John Njenga Kamau, yet he now adamantly denies knowing anyone by that name. He has called himself Wanyu Brush since 1969, when he began painting under the guidance of Gallery Watatu’s late Ruth Schaffner. Wanyu means yours, and so with his self-chosen name this eccentric artist bares the most fundamental truth of his artistic philosophy: “I am your brush.”
