Gakunju is a Kenyan who has been sculpting for 26 years. He uses stone, wood, steel, resin, bronze and other materials with each medium to allow him to express different ideas and forms.
He doesn’t remember a time that he did't make art. As a child in primary school he was fortunate enough to have an art teacher, Mrs Saunders recognize and encourage him to draw from as early as Standard 1. Miss Kaderbhai at Lenana School pushed him in his art classes to always excel and when he joined KenyattaUniversity in 1977 he knew that making art would be his life’s work. Although painting was his major area all through college he quickly found his real love in sculpture and has not made it back to painting since 1983. (Profile; Kuona Trust)
